Dear Colleagues, 22 June 1993
We would like to invite you and members of your research group to attend and
submit abstracts for presentation at an SPIE /IS&T Conference we are
organizing entitled "Three-Dimensional Microscopy: Image Acquisition and
Processing." The meeting will be held in San Jose, California, during the
week of 6-10 February, 1994. This marks the fifth year that the conference
will be included in an overall Symposium on Electronic Imaging Science and
Technology that comprises some 16 additional conferences on a variety of
topics. These include such areas as image acquisition devices (including CCDs
and solid state optical sensors), image processing algorithms, stereoscopic
displays, beam deflection and scanning technologies, liquid crystal devices
and practical holography.
We would like to emphasize that this symposium will largely be comprised of
instrumentation and software engineers rather than biomedical users of
commercial instruments (although the latter will certainly be welcome to
attend). Therefore, we hope participants will find this a unique opportunity
to discuss imaging techniques and concerns which are common not only to 3-D
microscopy but to a broad range of biomedical, materials science and
industrial imaging systems. Furthermore, we believe the opportunity to attend
the many other conferences, under the program headings of image acquisition,
image processing, scanning and display technolo gies, and visual science, will
provide even greater opportunity for obtaining information pertinent to the
whole 3-D microscopy discipline.
Papers are invited in the following and related areas:
* confocal microscopy
* 3-D image formation
* instrumentation for 3-D microscopy
* time-resolved image acquisition systems
* image processing and analysis
* 3-D image reconstruction
* super-resolution
* spatio-temporal reconstruction of living cells and tissues
* applications of 3-D microscopy in materials science
* image visualization techniques for 3-D microscopy systems, including
volume rendering, animation, stereoscopic and holographic display.
Please take special notice that an initial 500 word abstract is due by 12
July, 1993, and can be sent by email, fax or post to SPIE:

Please include: Title of Paper; Authors and all of their addresses, emails,
faxes; Conference Name (i.e. 3-D Microscopy, Cogswell and Carlsson, chairs);
Abstract (up to 500 words); and a Brief Biography of the principal author
(50-100 words).
A final revised abstract plus a manuscript will be due at later dates. This
is in keeping with SPIE/IS&T policy on providing comprehensive publicity for
their conferences that includes publishing an advanced program listing of
speakers in addition to a book of abstracts distributed at the start of the
symposium.
We have taken care to plan this conference with special thought to timing,
topics and location, so that it will not compete with the next International
Conference on Confocal Microscopy and 3-D Image Processing which is planned
for 25-28 April, 1994, in Munich, Germany. Several members of our organizing
committee are also involved in planning the Munich conference, which we
envision as being complementary to this one.
We hope to hear from you in the very near future and look forward to seeing
you in San Jose in February. Please contact us by email if you have any
questions.
Yours sincerely,
Carol J. Cogswell and Kjell Carlsson (Conference Chairs)
