Dear Dr. klaren,

we have had a Leica TCS-4d upright confocal microscope here in
Galway since June of last year.

Like you we were very frustrated by (1) Lack of technical
glossary (2) Lack of page numbering in the manual for the TCS-4d.

We had an unfortunate accident, in which the binder holding the
loose leaf manual sprang open showering free, un-numbered pages about our feet.
We were horrified. However upon close scrutiny we did see that in tiny
lettering at the bottom of each page is something like BEDTCSEa-13, you'll find
that the last four characters are alpha-numeric sequential (i.e.page 'numbers').

We then organised the manual into its sections ( Image Rec.
1, Image Trans 1.....) and inserted a coloured subject divider between each
section, ( hint to Leica !) and now our manual is immensely more useful.

Regarding terms like IPP etc. as I have said a technical
glossary would be a useful addition to the manual. Specifically this refers to
a large bank of RAM chips which may hold 8 'pages' of 512 x 512 bit or
4 ' 1024 x 1024" etc. pictures, which have been scanned into memory.

The IPP portion of memory is analogous to ones active memory,
i.e. information is instantly retrievable. Images not stored in the IPP memory
range is akin to ones long term memory ( e.g. what grade you received in high
school math, final exam ), it has to be brought into active memory, and hence
is processed more slowly.

The designation of memory ranges by means of four colours,
while it appears to be bewildering at first, allows logical and proficient
movement of images within the memory capabilities of the system.I believe this
memory system is partly the creation of a certain Dr.Jean Davoust (I am open to
correction on this point ). Once one 'gets-it' you learn to enjoy this method
of manipulating memory.

Most of our simple 'points of information' questions were
succinctly answered by Gerhard Dorne <[log in to unmask]>, and our local Leica
reps. who are most helpful, when one can contact them.

P.S. Thank you to all users who replied to my request for
information on Cy5 Ab's your shared experience and
                information is much appreciated.

        Yours Patrick Corley
