Thanks Guy for the clear explanation of the lens and tube situation.  What I am
 still confused about is how this affects confocal image formation when the epi
 light is passing back thhrough the lens to the scan head and is therefore unco
rrected by tube lens or eyepiece.  Will a Nikon lens be OK for confocal image f
ormation on a Zeiss axio stand? Dave Knecht
