POST DOCTORALPOSITION DESCRIPTIONInter-individualdifferencesinpredispositionandseverityofpulmonaryinfectionsandinflammatorylungdiseasearepoorlyunderstood.SurfactantproteinA(SP-A),asidefromitssurfactant-related functions(i.e.,surfactantstability andstructure,andsurfactantsecretion),hasanessentialroleininnatehostdefense.SP-AmodulatesthephenotypeofalveolarmacrophagesAM,thesentinelcellsoflunginnateimmunity,andenhancesphagocytosisofpathogens, as well as affectscytokine productionandotherhostdefensefunctions.HumanSP-Aisencodedbytwosimilargenes,SP-A1andSP-A2,withspliceandsequencevariantsidentifiedforeach.Theresearchfocusis:a)onthedifferentialregulationofSP-Ageneticvariantsexpressionwithemphasisontheroleof5’UTRand3’UTRontranslation(Noutsios,AJP Lung 2013, 304: L722-L735; Silveyra,AJP
