Hi Adam,

we had a similar issue with our LSM 780 some time ago. Zeiss engineer at first replaced the battery in RTC, but the problem persisted. The next step was connecting a monitor and a keyboard to the RTC. It turned out that the RTC was running into an error while booting and required pressing F1 to resume.

Our system was still under warranty at that time (a refurbished ex-demo unit, hence under warranty despite being pretty old) and Zeiss have replaced the RTC (with a slightly newer second-hand unit). However, the F1 trick worked for the period before the RTC replacement.

Yours issue may not be the same as ours but connecting a monitor and a keyboard to the RTC is certainly something to try, as Zdenek suggested.

Best wishes,
Radek

Hi Adam,

We are still running our Zeiss LSM 710 so can’t offer any parts sorry.

We get this error too but it usually happens in the following circumstances.

A.The user starts up the RTC too early.
We only turn on the RTC (switch number 3 - Components) after the user has logged into the Windows PC. This has been required since we went to Windows 7 (we are now at Windows 10). We then wait until we hear the start up sounds from the scan head and then start ZEN.
If we turn the Components switch on any earlier, we always get the RTC error. In this case, we exit from ZEN, turn off the Components switch. Wait a minute, then turn it back on. Wait for the sounds from the scanner to stop) and restart ZEN.

B.The system has an extended period (while turned on) without use, e.g. more than 2 hours.
In this case, it’s an easy fix. We just exit from ZEN and then turn off the Components switch. Wait a minute, then turn it back on (wait for the sounds from the scanner to stop) and restart ZEN.

In my experience, the Reset button does nothing.

In both circumstances, I think it’s a communication failure issue between the Windows PC and the RTC.

I have a laminated sheet next to the system to remind the users what to do in the event of the error.

Kind regards,

Jacqui

Might anyone be decommissioning a Zeiss LSM710 confocal and have a spare
"real-time controller" please?

Or might anyone know how to fix one that appears to be otherwise in good
order?

We are getting this error message when trying to boot up our trusty old
confocal:
"Failed to connect to realtime controller"
The message goes on to describe how to reset the realtime controller, which
we have done. Rebooting everything also did not help. Googling the issue
revealed there are different preferred methods for resetting, but none
solve the problem.

The realtime controller appears to be a normal computer tower with
apparently standard power supply, motherboard, CPU, RAM, etc. It appears
to run "headless" (i.e. without a monitor, keyboard, and mouse) and it does
power up, i.e. it isn't simply that the power supply is dead.

Any help would be greatly appreciated because Zeiss wants £12000 to replace
it!

Thank you,
Adam
