This is the first Hands-On Confocal Course aimed purely at postgraduate
students, by the RMS. The course will enable students to fully
appreciate and utilise the confocal microscope with confidence and help
participants realise the potential of confocal imaging, beyond taking
pretty pictures.

Participants will develop their confocal microscopy background as well
as try FRAP, FRET and spectral unmixing themselves. The confocal course
will utilise many different sample types and fluorescent probes (DNA
stains, classic antibody labels and fluorescent proteins) and will be
chosen to best demonstrate particular problems and techniques. The focus

will be on the techniques that they enable and the problems they
generate, which will be applicable to any sample types. The 2 says will
consist of 3 short tutorials, followed by hands-on practice on the Zeiss

LSM 510 meta confocal microscopes. Both novice and more experienced
users welcome.

It is anticipated that there will be time at the end for work on
participants own samples and to demonstrate any further questions.

Accommodation (en-suite), breakfast and evening meal can be provided
with very close proximity to the Department of Biology. Lunches will be
provided over the duration of the course. Course meal and City tour will

take place on the Thursday evening.

York is easily accessed by road or rail, with direct trains from London
to York taking under 2 hours.

Places are limited to 8 participants to permit full hands-on practice,
so please book early to avoid disappointment.

Please ensure that when you register you give us the name of your
supervisor who can confirm that you are a postgraduate student.
