In reply to the question by Stamatis as to why the laser will bleach only
one of the two dyes:
 
If you use a single line (488nm on an Argon ion laser) then the Texas Red
channel is being excited well outside its optimum wavelength and so is much
less sensitive to fading compared FITC.
