We've used the reflectance mode of the confocal for biological samples
stained for specific proteins with gold, silver and enhanced with other
metals such as Ni. There are also a number of histological methods, such
as a lead ATPase reaction, that work well in reflectance mode. In
addition, more like materials science, we've imaged into epoxy blocks
prepared for EM. Works great.
