As we all know (don't we?) next year is the centenary of
the death of Ernst Abbe. So, to celebrate I've decided
to give a bit more publicity to a project that Jim Pawley
and I started on while he was on sabbatical in Sydney.
This is a digital re-creation of the Abbe Diffraction Kit -
a collection of test specimens and back-focal-plane masks
that the Zeiss company marketed for something like 50 years.
With a small amount of financial backing from the Australian
Key Centre for Microscopy & Microanalysis, and help from
Dennnis Dwarte and my son Cassian, we put together a working
version incorporating one of the test images and a small
subset of 3 tools. We are actively seeking sponsorship
to complete the job!
The current version is available for download on my website
http://www.guycox.com/gcs/ - just follow the link to the
Diffraction Kit. (You may find other things you like there -
electron microscopists may be interested in the Monte Carlo
program - also a free download).
Comments, suggestions (and offers of sponsorship) are most
welcome.
