To all fellow confocal microscopists,

The following research position will be advertised very shortly. Interested
persons are encouraged to contact me for more information.

.........

SENIOR RESEARCH OFFICER
BIOMEDICAL CONFOCAL MICROSCOPY RESEARCH CENTRE (BCMRC)
DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACOLOGY
UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Expressions of interest are invited for the above position which will be
funded for 3 years in the first instance through a grant from the Lotteries
Commission of Western Australia. The successful applicant would be
expected to have a PhD in one of the life sciences with experience in
confocal microscopy, together with some computing expertise. The appointee
will be based in the BCMRC, Department of Pharmacology, University of
Western Australia, a research centre set up to house the first UV confocal
microscope to be installed in the Southern Hemisphere. The appointee will
have unique opportunities for collaborative interactions with various
research groups within the universities, hospitals and institutions in
Perth, working in areas including respiratory pharmacology and asthma,
breast carcinogenesis, retinal neural and vascular networks, and
inflammation and regeneration in skeletal muscle. The major task will be
to provide support and advice to these research groups and to develop novel
uses for our newly acquired UV confocal microscope. The major uses for
this equipment are expected to primarily involve the dynamics of events in
living cells and tissues, particularly the measurement of intracellular
ions like calcium. It is also anticipated that 3-dimensional imaging and
dual/triple labelling will be routinely performed. The confocal microscope
is part of a complete networked computer imaging system, which includes
remote PC-based Pentium and PowerMac workstations, a DEC 3000/500 Alpha
graphics workstation and an extensive suite of imaging software. This
position offers the highly motivated and practical person with good
interpersonal skills a truly exciting opportunity to be involved in state-
of-the-art technology in biological research and computing. The salary and
conditions would be commensurate with that of a Senior Research Officer
(NH&MRC) level 1 position (approx AUS$42,198 p.a.). The expected closing
date for formal applications is 16th December 1994 and the successful
applicant would be expected to commence in March/April 1995.

Interested persons are encouraged to contact the following for further
information as soon as possible:
1. Assoc. Professor R.G. Goldie, telephone 61-9-346-2812, fax 61-9-346-3469,

Remember, Perth, on the southwest coast of Western Australia, is a wonderful
place to live, with an outdoor life style to match its superb weather.
