Faculty Director of Microscopy Research Core Laboratory

      The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill



The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking applicants for a research track faculty position to serve as Director for a high quality Microscopy Services Core Laboratory. Rank will be determined by the candidate's achievements.  Preference will be given to candidates with established expertise in the use of sophisticated light and electron microscopy (EM) methods. Prior experience in a service-oriented position is preferred.



The ideal candidates will have excellent experience in state-of-the-art microscopy techniques, including, but not limited to: transmission and scanning EM, correlation microscopy (miniSOG), and fluorescence microscopy (wide-field, laser scanning confocal, spinning disk confocal, live sample imaging, FRAP,  FRET). The applicant should have applied knowledge of imaging software programs including Fluo View, Metamorph, and Imaris and expertise in analytic means for 3-D reconstruction, quantification of cell motility and velocity, and co-localization intensities among others.



Specific responsibilities include oversight of microscopy operations including general maintenance of equipment and quality control; administrative responsibility for billing, reporting, compliance and fee adjustments; consultation and training of clients on technique and interpretation of results; planning for addition of new technologies and funding their acquisition and maintenance; supervision and evaluation of laboratory staff; and collaborating on publications and grants.



Candidates should have a doctorate in biomedical sciences or other appropriate field, and at least two years of relevant post-graduate experience. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary, funded research programs, as well as a track record of scholarly accomplishment using state-of-the-art imaging approaches.
