We once ran Cargill's Type FF oil ("For fluorescence critical" application)
and Zeiss's immersion oil in a spectrofluorometer. If I recall correctly we
were exciting ~568 nm and looking at everything to the red. Cargill's oil
was at least 10x more fluorescent than Zeiss's. We had done this in an
effort to trace some background fluorescence using a regular microscope.
That was not the problem but we definitely did not switch to Cargill's oil.
The bottle was new but the problem could vary from lot to lot -- we never
checked.

>Cargille is a (the?) major supplier of immersion oils. They have a range
>of oils with characteristics such as high viscosity (nice for an inverted
>scope) and low or fluorescence free. Their numbers are 201-239-6633
>(voice) and 201-239=6096.
