Systems Administrator
Overview:

The Microscopic Cellular Imaging Facility of the Montreal Neurological Institute (The Neuro) and the Advanced BioImaging Facility of McGill University serve approximately 400 researchers and oversee more than 25 advanced microscopes between them.  To further the Open Science mission of The Neuro, better enable data sharing between facilities and foster more collaborative work between researchers, the two facilities will establish a new platform for microscopy data storage curation, management, presentation and sharing supported by the Tenenbaum Open Science Institute. The platform will use the most advanced and widely used database platform available - OMERO (Open Microscopy Environment Remote Objects) - which has been developed by the Open Microscopy Environment Consortium (OME, www.openmicroscopy.org<http://www.openmicroscopy.org/>). The advertised position will encompass both administrative and organizational tasks in coordinating the work of project members and provide them with administrative and/or technical support. It will also include tasks in the communication of project goals and progress to the microscopy community at McGill, throughout the Montreal area, Canada BioImaging and BioImaging North America.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  1.  Installation and maintenance of OMERO:  Install the database both on a local data server and in Compute Canada-based cloud space; maintain the database in good working order, establish a routine backup schedule and secure the platform against cyberattacks.
  2.  Customization: Customize and adapt the database and its components to the researcher's needs, in close collaboration with research laboratory representatives.
  3.  Consultation: Keep close contact with user laboratories. Help the laboratories to implement OMERO in their routine data storage, management and sharing practices.
  4.  Automation: Once OMERO is installed and stable and user laboratories have started routine use, develop code that enables automation of data management and sharing routines.
  5.  Documentation: Develop detailed documentation for future system administrators to efficiently maintain and operate the platform.
  6.  Outreach: Assist in promoting OMERO to potential users, mainly through consulting and educational presentations.

Specific Education and Experience Required:

  1.  Highly proficient with UNIX/Linux systems.
  2.  Ability to deploy software both locally and in cloud-based environments.
  3.  Experience in scripting to enable automation of work routines in OMERO and implement customization as per needs formulated by users.
  4.  Familiar with IT best practices, such as code versioning, testing, documentation and sharing.
  5.  Strong interpersonal and communication skills for working with OMERO users, principal investigators and potential new users within the research community.
  6.  A background in microscopy, neuroscience or cell biology in addition to computing and systems administration is not required but would be an asset.
  7.  Strong verbal and written communication in English.
  8.  Strong verbal and written communication in French is not required but would be an asset.


Duration and compensation:
The initial appointment is for 1-year. There is potential to renew for additional years dependent on funding. Starting salary depending on experience.
