Do you require a vital stain for your samples? The use of a fluorescent
Schiff's stain after Periodic acid oxidation is fairly specific if you
have samples that are not living and can be treated in that fashion.

The standard Schiff's reagent prepared with pararosanilin fluoresces
adequately when excited by "green" of a Rhodamine set.
