Olaf

We routinely use jp2 loss-less format. You can download a plugin for
photoshop from www.algovision-luratech.com.
We have obtained 46% compression at the lossless setting so you should get
twice as much data on a CD. jp2 has been accepted by ISO so should be
supported by newer versions of image processing software. We use the free
Irfanview to batch convert.

Hello Olaf,

I haven't heard of any problems with ZIP, and I use it quite often. Another
option would be to select an image file format that allows compression.
There is a JPG standard (JPEG2000), which allows loss-less compression, but
then again, I have no information about the robustness of that format
either.

Don't expect huge space savings from ZIP, though. Typically you get
compression factor of 2. Since hard disks are pretty cheap these days, it
may not be worth the hassle of zipping everything.

Subject: Winzip? Data Compression for Archive

Search the CONFOCAL archive at
http://listserv.acsu.buffalo.edu/cgi-bin/wa?S1=confocal

Hello,

I have a question concerning winzip compression of confocal data: In order
to archive large amounts of data from our confocals (mainly tif-images
created by Leica LCS) I'm looking for a good way to compress the files. The
easiest would be to use winzip (which everybody has to unzip in case the
data needs to be restored). But I've heard rumors that winzip would not be
very reliable, especially with image data and that often files would be
corrupted and can't be restored. Is that true? Anybody who has experience
with that type of problem?

Thanks very much!

Olaf
