Attention MSIV EMIG students applying for an EM residency this year:
1: I want to make sure that you all have you applications all set and
ready to go (or hopefully already submitted) via ERAS. I always recommend
getting your application in as early as possible.
2: I also want to make sure that you have a good handle on how
many programs to apply to. Hopefully you have met with your advisor or a
faculty in EM to review your individual application and get specific tips. In
general, remember that you should shoot to set up at least 10 interviews--in
order to get 10 interview requests you may have to apply to a larger number
of programs initially. Some general suggestions:
-if you are AOA, many honors in clinical rotations and EM, USMLE step I >240
you may only need to apply to 12-15 programs
-if you have a mix of honors and excellent in rotations (and either grade in
EM), 220-240 on step I, you may need to apply to 20-30 programs
-if you have average clinical grades and a USMLE score <220, you may need
to apply to 30-50 programs
-if you failed step I or II you may need to apply to >50 programs and also
consider a backup plan (transitional year or other field)
It's a fun time of the year for the applicants and the programs! Any questions
at all, please contact me and I can assist!
