Scientist 1: Microscopy and Image Analysis Laboratory

Duties
Under the general direction of the head of the microscopy and image
analysis laboratory, undertake research to enable the segmentation,
quantification and modeling of individual cells from 3D digital microscope
images of biological specimens (75% time). This project may include
developing algorithms based on anisotropic diffusion, dynamic programming,
spatial statistical analysis, live cell tracking, measurement of protein
diffusion and interactions, and mathematical modeling. The developed
techniques will be used for understanding the molecular basis of cell-cell
communication mechanisms within their tissue context, and how such
mechanisms change during carcinogenesis. This project is expected to
involve close interaction with Cancer Biologists at the National Cancer
Institute (NCI), and scientists in the Advanced Biomedical Computing Center
at NCI - Frederick. The remainder of the time (25%) will be spent
participating in the general running and development of the optical
microscopy facility, which will include keeping abreast of the latest
microscopy, imaging and computer technologies, as well as the science being
performed by NCI scientists using the core.

Essential Qualifications Ph.D.; excellent inter-personal skills; experience
in C/C++ programming and image analysis; strong abilities in math; working
knowledge of optics, fluorescence microscopy, statistics and life sciences
research; scientific / technical publications and oral presentations, and
demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team. Recent
PhD graduates with well-matched expertise should consider applying.

tissue (50%), and operate confocal microscopes and image analysis software
(50%).

Expertise: B.S. plus two years of relevant experience. Independently
perform and learn the application of new laboratory techniques; perform
mammalian cell culture;use specialized laboratory instruments; use
specialized computer software for image analysis; optical microscopy
