On our Olympus microscopes, we now use the 103 bulbs - they last much 
longer and are much more stable on average than the 100 series. Despite 
what people often say, we routinely run these bulbs out to 600-800 
hours without incident (like the occasional explosions that used to 
happen with the old 50w or 200w HBO lamps...). The trick seems to be 
not to turn them on and off for short times (eg < 30-45 minutes) too 
often.
