Today the Bell's Vireo was once again found in the SW corner of Xcel's
High Bridge facility. It was in the small to medium-sized trees on the
south side of the water containment pond, singing its signature song,
and then sounding an alarm call at our approach. It's the third or
fourth time since the construction on the next lot, that the bird was
heard in this location, so it appears to have re-located here. If it
returns here next spring, it should be easily heard right from the
road (Randolph Ave.).

After gaining access to the site, it's more understandable why this
area was an acceptable habitat. Aside from its location on the river,
with its abundant food resources, it has a containment pond area
ringed by small trees and shrubs, and surrounded by an open, grassy
area which Xcel is returning to its natural state. Some prairie
wildflowers are already in evidence here. There are no plans to
develop this section, either, so it appears to be safe.

A thank-you is in order to Xcel personnel for helping us gain access:
Colette Jurek, Community Relations, and Brian Behm, Plant Director.
Xcel's interest in the welfare of the birds is appreciated.

Linda Whyte
