Subject:Summer Tanager, Carpenter Nature Center, Hastings

Thanks to the alert and informed staff at Carpenter Nature Center, I
enjoyed a new life bird this afternoon. The female Summer Tanager was
stunning in her variegated colors, and was rather cooperative, once
located. She flew between the old Interpretive Center and the
Administration Building several times, visiting yew, birch and conifer
trees, but spending much of her time on south-facing roofs, balcony
and stone terrace. She was especially visible on the terrace wall at
the side of the administration building, peering into the garden
below, then dropping down to feed several times. It was easy to remain
behind a nearby conifer trunk and observe without disturbing her. When
she vacated the terrace I was able to bring an offering of mealworms
(live-raised there), and leave the tray on the wall. Here's hoping she
enjoyed them before her neighbors got them!

(Thanks, Al and Jen---like all of CNC staff, you 'give to the max' of
yourselves, and this volunteer benefits ;-)
