Barry, I dehydrate my samples through to 100% ethanol before going into
methyl salicylate.  I initally fix my embryos in 90% methanol-50mM EGTA
since this gives me the microtubule preservation I'm looking for.
Unfortunately there is also significant shrinkage, but this has occurred
before I go through deydration and mounting.  It is definitely necessary
to dehydrate, though, in my experience.  PLH
