The best options are ethidium bromide (red) and Hoescht 33258 (also known as
bisbenzimide: blue) and Fluoro Nissl Green (green). The first two were
described first in: Schmued LC. Swanson LW. Sawchenko PE: Some fluorescent
counterstains for neuroanatomical studies. Journal of Histochemistry &
Cytochemistry. 30(2):123-8, 1982 Feb.

For Fluoro Nissl Green, see: Quinn B. Toga AW. Motamed S. Merlic CA: Fluoro
nissl green: a novel fluorescent counterstain for neuroanatomy. Neuroscience
Letters. 184(3):169-72, 1995 Jan 30.

For issues related to autoradiography, see: Schnell SA. Wessendorf MW:
Bisbenzimide: a fluorescent counterstain for tissue autoradiography.
Histochemistry & Cell Biology. 103(2):111-4, 1995 Feb.

Good luck!
