this problem has been discussed on this list in the past, but unfortunately
I'm not sure a solution found.

we've had similar problems for several years and shifted to network
transfers of the files. The problem shows as a fractured image as if broken
into rectangular segments and shuffled around. Sometimes the effects are
barely noticeable. I suspect the problem comes from a confusion wrt to the
sectors in the file - since often (some/all of) the image fragments are not
from the file we're looking at.

We have always carefully low-level formatted new disks and checked for the
number of bad sectors remapped by SCSI. The problem has occured under
System 7.1, 7.5.1 & 7.5.3. We've used both Insignia's AccessPC (several
versions) and PC Exchange (based partly on Insignia's technology). Most of
the DOS formatted MOs were prepared under OS/2 with CorelSCSI such that
they were readable under DOS, OS/2 and Mac, but at one point confirmed the
problem persisted with an MO formatted just under DOS. DOS' chkdsk never
reported any problems with the directory structure of these disks, nor did
low-level sector verifies on PC & Mac MO drives show evidence of any
sectors being marginal - with software providing access to the
configuration pages in the SCSI drive you can reconfigure the number of
retries down to 0/1.

if I had the time and enthusiasm, I'd read a file on a Mac exhibiting these
problems and break it into the 512 byte chunks corresponding to the
sectors. Then compare these against all of the sectors on the disk to build
up a map of which sectors PC Exchange was using for the file. That sort of
detail might provide a clue.

cheers,
Danny Thomas
