This is the Duluth Birding Report for September 23rd, 2010 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

An immature SABINE'S GULL was found by Kim Eckert on the 20th on the bay side of Park Point near the rowing club. Karl Bardon also saw two juveniles and an adult SABINE'S GULL on the same day on the Minnesota side of the Superior Entry, as well as a SURF SCOTER. Two PARASITIC JAEGERS, a RED-THROATED LOON, and three FRANKLIN'S GULLS were seen by Sparky Stensaas and others on the 22nd at Wisconsin Point. Mike Hendrickson and others saw an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL on the 18th at Gull Bluff on Wisconsin Point.

A LARK SPARROW was seen at the Hawk Ridge main overlook from the 19th though the 21st. A ROSS'S GOOSE was seen at Hawk Ridge on the 22nd, as well as a HARRIS’S SPARROW and a FOX SPARROW. A SWAINSON’S HAWK was seen on the 19th near the mouth of the Lester River.

As I compile this a cold rain is pounding down outside, and leaves are giving up their struggle to hang on. The wind is howling, reminding us of the blizzards to come. Fall migrant sparrows are starting to come through, and the last of the warblers are still being reported.

A male BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER was reported by Dennis Weisenborn on September 19 in Moorhead, Clay County, across from Fargo's Mickelson Park.

The highlights were a lone Red-necked Phalarope at the Castle Danger sewage ponds (any phalarope in NE Minn is unusual), and 2-3 unusually early Bohemian Waxwings in Beaver Bay (Slater Dr, between Hwy 61 and the lake). Most sightings of this species in Minnesota = have been of individuals or small groups, but larger flocks have been = seen on two occasions: 26 birds at the Superior Entry 9/23/2000 (plus 3 = more seen only on the Wisconsin side of the Entry, Loon 73:187) and 70 = birds at Park Point 9/16/2005 (Loon 78:118-118).=20 Late this afternoon, a group of birders refound a Smith's Longspur = originally found and photographed by Michael Furtman near 27th Ave West, = Duluth. We are closing in on the last of the migration, and leaves are falling fast with the winds of the past few sunny days. Most obvious migrants this week are the sparrows, and many robins are coming through.

On September 19, Beth Siverhus reported flocks of LAPLAND LONGSPURS along the road to the Northwest Angle of Lake of the Woods. GRAY JAYS were also seen there.

In Warroad , Roseau County, Beth observed AMERICAN REDSTARTS, and WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS on September 28.

Here in Pennington County, on September 26, I saw two late COMMON NIGHTHAWKS bug catching in the early evening while on my way home from work. On September 28, DARK-EYED JUNCOS, and many AMERICAN ROBINS arrived in the yard. WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, HARRIS'S SPARROWS, and PURPLE FINCHES joined them on September 29. The finches have been here off and on for awhile.

This is the Duluth Birding Report for September 30th, 2010 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

A flock of ten SABINE'S GULLS was found on the 25th by Peder Svingen on the Minnesota side of the Superior Entry. Mike Hendrickson and Erik Bruhnke saw a PARASITIC JAEGER, a POMARINE JEAGER, a SABINE'S GULL, and a FRANKLIN’S GULL on the 28th at the first parking lot on Wisconsin Point. A SMITH’S LONGSPUR was found by Mike Furtman on the 25th near the 27th Avenue West exit on the south side of I-35.

Dedrick Benz and others saw three GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE on the 25th and 26th at the Beaver Bay sewage lagoons. Kim Eckert found a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE on the 24th at the Castle Danger sewage lagoons. Kim also saw early BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in Beaver Bay on the 24th.

A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was relocated on the 28th in Two Harbors at 320 2nd Avenue. A BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was seen on the 30th at the Two Harbors cemetery ponds. Small numbers of GRAY JAYS have been seen during the past week migrating along the North Shore between Duluth and Grand Marais.
