This is the Minnesota Birding Report for November 18th, 2010.

On November 12th, an adult CALIFORNIA GULL was identified by Karl Bardon at the far end of Park Point in Duluth. Other gulls in the area include GLAUCOUS GULL, THAYER'S GULL, GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL, HERRING GULL, BONAPARTE'S GULL, RING-BILLED GULL, and LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL.

Also on November 12th, a BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was on Lake Superior in Duluth, first seen in the 21st Avenue East area but also near the rowing club of Park Point.

A NORTHERN HAWK OWL was still at mile marker 49 of state highway 72 in Lake of the Woods County on the 15th, and a GREAT GRAY OWL was in St. Louis County along Forest Highway 11 near Jenkins Creek.

TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRES are still being seen at the Ann Lake Campground of Sherburne NWR in Sherburne County, and at the north end of Lake Vadnais in Ramsey County. The Ramsey County bird is frequenting the cedars on the west side of County Road F.

And a very late SCARLET TANAGER was at Larry Wilebski's cabin in Kittson County on November 15th.

The next scheduled update of this tape is November 25th, 2010. --====1290180994====-- ========================================================================= Date: Fri, 19 Nov 2010 19:30:55 -0700 Reply-To: Jeanie Joppru Sender: Rare Bird Alert From: Jeanie Joppru Subject: [mou-net] Summer Tanager in Roseau County Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Ron Erpelding found a Summer Tanager in Greenbush this afternoon. Coming into Lac Qui Parle County from Chippewa County on Hwy 40 (which splits Lac Qui Parle Lake), take the 1st right on CR66. Almost immediately you will come to a home on your right, almost completely hidden by evergreens and cedars. I stopped here to check for Purple Finches (I didn't find any), but was puzzled when I caught a glimpse of a small green-backed bird with a yellow belly in the cedars to the left of the driveway. Eventually I did get a good look at the yellow spectacles, olive-green back, white wing bars, and a yellow belly. I initially thought it was a Yellow-throated Vireo, but knew something didn't look right, and a quick check in my Sibley reminded me a Yellow-throated Vireo would have a white belly. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888. What a difference a week makes! The northland is blindingly white now, and temperatures are hovering in the single digits. The snow has come nicely, with little of the great wind that was forecast, and it lies deep on everything. Feeders have been busy in the past few days, and a few late migrants have found themselves in unfamiliar circumstances. Sightings of the unusual category include the SUMMER TANAGER found by Ron Erpelding in Greenbush, Roseau County on November 19. It was not relocated after that day. On November 22, Larry Wilebski reported a VARIED THRUSH in fruit trees in Lancaster, Kittson County. Location is north of the railroad tracks- best place is north of Bergstrom's gas station- anywhere there are crabapple trees with fruit on them. This afternoon, November 25, I observed a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER feeding at one of our bird feeders east of Thief River Falls, Pennington County. Ron Erpelding made as swing through the northwest last weekend, and many of the sightings this week are his. He found BALD EAGLES, NORTHERN HARRIERS, and ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS in most of the counties in the northwest. A NORTHERN SHRIKE, 5 SNOW BUNTINGS, and 3 AMERICAN ROBINS were seen in Roseau County on November 20. CEDAR WAXWINGS were found in Gonvick, Clearwater County on November 18. A large flock of TUNDRA SWANS were on the rice paddies northeast of Gonvick. On November 20 , in Kittson County a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was relocated in Karlstad. Other species seen in the county included BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS and 4 AMERICAN ROBINS in Karlstad, and 5 SNOW BUNTINGS, 5 PINE GROSBEAKS, COMMON REDPOLLS, and 3 PURPLE FINCHES at Lake Bronson State Park. Maggie Anderson at Agassiz NWR reported that on November 13, a family of TRUMPETER SWANS with 2 cygnets was seen on Tamarac Pool. Many ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, and a SHORT-EARED OWL were also seen. An immature SNOWY OWL was seen on November 18 at Farmes Pool. Other species seen at the refuge in the past week included TUNDRA SWANS, HOODED MERGANSER, BALD EAGLE, SNOW BUNTINGS, and PINE SISKINS. Ron Erpelding found BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS at Middle River on November 19. In Thief River Falls, Pennington County, Ron Erpelding found a few BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on November 20. A RED-BREASTED MERGANSER was seen in a sliver of open water at the wastewater treatment ponds. In Red Lake County, species seen on November 20 included NORTHERN SHRIKE, a GREAT HORNED OWL, 6 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS east of MN 32 on a dead end road, and 3 CEDAR WAXWINGS in the town of Red Lake Falls. Sandy Aubol in East Grand Forks, Polk County, had a NORTHERN SHRIKE in their yard on November 23. Karen Suldahl saw CEDAR WAXWINGS and DARK-EYED JUNCOS in Climax on November 24. Donna and Leon Thoreson reported BALD EAGLE, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, AMERICAN CROWS, and BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES all feeding on a deer carcass at their home. 100 SNOW BUNTINGS and a LINCOLN'S SPARROW are visiting their feeders. NORTHERN SHRIKE, and LAPLAND LONGSPURS were observed in Mahnomen County on November 20. In Becker County, Beau Shroyer found 100 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on the shore of Big Detroit Lake across from Sunrise Lane on November 22. There were COMMON GOLDENEYES on the lake. A NORTHERN CARDINAL was seen at the visitor center at Itasca SP on November 21. 30 COMMON MERGANSERS were seen on Lake George. A flock of COMMON REDPOLLS was seen in Hubbard County by Marshall Howe. Thanks to Beau Shroyer, Donna and Leon Thoreson, Karen Suldahl, Larry Wilebski, Maggie Anderson, Marshall Howe, Ron Erpelding, and Sandy Aubol for their reports. This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, November 25, 2010 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Among the HERRING GULLS (no Ring-billed Gulls observed this morning), I observed one juvenile GLAUCOUS GULL, one adult THAYER'S GULL, and that probable ICELAND x THAYER'S GULL HYBRID. It's neat to see the transition of gulls moving through. Although there could be many Ring-billed Gulls still lingering around, this morning was my first morning of this autumn's gull-watching where I didn't observe one Ring-billed Gull. Many COMMON GOLDENEYES are paddling around Canal Park too! Photos are below. Enjoy! The tongues are the sections of gray that "push into" the black primaries. Herring Gulls have much more black throughout the ends of the wings (very black primaries), whereas the amount of black on adult Thayer's Gulls primaries is somewhat limited due to the gray tongues taking place of the black coloration. Also, adult Thayer's Gulls have considerable tongue tips (the white section of the tongues that go into the black). The other feature that gives adult Thayer's Gulls a very pale-wing-ended appearance are the mirrors (white inset sections of the primaries). Adult Thayer's Gulls show an isolated large white mirror on the outermost primary, and typically have a bulging, but connected mirror on the P9 (2nd-outermost primary). Overall adult Thayer's Gulls, even when viewed with the naked eye, have a rounder/paler-winged appearance due to the amount of white at the end of the wing. Herring Gulls, with the large amount of black throughout the primaries, show very well-defined and elongated-looking wing ends. Thayer's Gulls also tend to show a slightly more round-headed appearance when viewed in nearby comparison to the slightly more blocky-headed Herring Gull. Just wanted to throw some cool gull tidbits out there! I just love the high contrast of adult Thayer's Gulls. They are so striking! When seen next to an adult Herring Gull (like in the first Thayer's Gull photo link), the adult Thayer's Gulls have a slightly darker gray mantle (backside), usually a dark eye, and a bright yellow bill. I hope you enjoy the photos of these cool birds.
