Help: Application for a List

Listname

The listname must be unique on the lists.umn.edu system and should not create conflicts with other email addresses at the University or with public lists on other list servers. The list name should be long enough to be meaningful, but short enough to be easy to remember and type (it is part of the email address for the list). It should begin with a letter (A-Z) and contain only letters, numbers (0-9), and dashes (-). It is common practice to end a listname with "-L" to indicate that it is a listname rather than a username.

Some lists of lists:

Title

The descriptive title will be included on the "from:" line on all messages from the list, so it should be short and succinct.

Some lists of lists:

Purpose

The statement of purpose may be as long as necessary to adequately state the purpose of the list, outline ground rules, and provide any other relevant information.

Owner

Each list must have at least one owner. The primary owner is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the list, and will be the recipient of any delivery error messages which result from list postings, as well as any other administrative messages issued by the server. If there are multiple owners, some may be designated as "quiet" owners. These "quiet" owners will have full ownership authority, but they will not receive administrative or error messages from the server.

Editor

If an editor is not explicitly specified, the primary owner will be the list editor. Editors have explicit posting rights, regardless of any other restrictions that may be placed on the list. On a moderated list, postings from non-editors are forwarded to the primary editor for approval.

Confidential

This setting determines who may learn about the list's existence by sending a lists command to the server. If the list archives are accessible via the web, this setting also determines whether the list name appears on the archives menu page.

Subscription

This setting determines how subscription requests are handled.

Review

This setting determines who may obtain a list of subscribers by sending a review command to the server.

Send

This setting determines who may post to the list without explicit approval by the moderator.

Notebook

This setting determines whether copies of list messages are kept in an archive, how often a new archive is started, who may view or search the list archives, and whether the list archives are accessible through the Listserv web interface.
