[ORGANIZATION] TAKES PART IN NATIONAL INITIATIVE FOR THE UNINSURED
Cover the Uninsured Week to Raise Awareness
[ORGANIZATION] has joined with AARP, AFL-CIO, Blue Cross and Blue Shield
of Minnesota, Children=92s Defense Fund, Cover All Kids Coalition,
Families USA/COACT, Minnesota Business Partnership, Minnesota Chamber of
Commerce, Minnesota Council of Health Plans, Minnesota Hospital
Association, Minnesota Medical Association, Minnesota Nurses
Association, Minnesota United Way, Service Employees International Union
Local 113, and other Minnesota organizations, to sponsor Cover the
Uninsured Week, a weeklong series of events to be held in Minnesota
March 10 to March 16, 2003.
Events will be held in communities from coast to coast, with former
Presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter serving as Honorary Co-Chairs.
The week will help raise awareness about the plight of the uninsured and
encourage Americans to find solutions. Leading the effort is a diverse
group of national organizations, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce
and AFL-CIO, and three major health foundations - The Robert Wood
Johnson Foundation, The California Endowment and the W.K. Kellogg
Foundation. Plans for the week include paid advertising, health and
enrollment fairs, town hall meetings, campus discussions, interfaith
events and more to help people learn about the issue, find resources and
share their stories.
Nearly 400,000 Minnesota residents are living without health care
coverage-and the number is growing. Data show that people without health
insurance delay getting necessary medical care and, live with untreated
illness. Some even die younger as a result. With health care costs
rising, even more Americans are likely to become uninsured, as people
and employers increasingly are unable to afford coverage.
