Dear Friend,

SARS. Iraq. Weapons of Mass Destruction. Today the headlines are full
of pressing concerns that demand both our attention and action. In
these troubling times we often ignore familiar problems when all we
hear about are new diseases and threats. Frequently forgotten is the
fact that HIV remains a pressing issue here in Minnesota. In Minnesota
a new case of HIV is diagnosed every 29 hours. That is why your
support of the 16th annual Minnesota Aids Walk is more important than
ever.

It sometimes feels as though we are powerless to stop the spread of
HIV, or make to a positive impact in the lives of those living with
the disease. But there are many steps you can take--you can join us
for the AIDS Walk and reaffirm your commitment to fighting HIV in
Minnesota.

Much attention has been paid by politicians, musicians and religious
leaders to the global HIV pandemic. But these same leaders seldom
mention our local struggle. In Minnesota we face two threats: an
ever-increasing number of HIV cases as demonstrated by a six percent
increase reported in 2002 and simultaneous efforts to undermine our
ability to provide comprehensive sexual health education to youth. The
monies raised at the AIDS Walk provide direct services to people
living with HIV, prevention education to targeted high-risk
populations, and work to move us one step closer to a state free of
new HIV infections. Most importantly, they provide us with the ability
to organize advocates statewide to fight these backwards attempts to
hinder HIV education.

Currently MAP provides direct services to over 2,200 people living
with HIV, as well as their children and families. Our outreach
programs reach over 175,000 people within Minnesota. But we cannot
continue to provide this level of service without your help.

The power of 10,000 people walking for a single goal sends a strong
message throughout the state--that we will not ignore HIV. For every
dollar raised by the Minnesota AIDS Project, 87 cents goes to
providing essential services for people struggling with HIV and to the
prevention of new cases.

The Minnesota AIDS Walk is an opportunity for you to join other
concerned Minnesotans to remember lives lost, celebrate battles won,
and continue the fight for an HIV free Minnesota. If you haven't done
so, please register online
http://register.mnaidsproject.org/site/R?i=t4_ZWGNLlbriAbd_sxqAZA.., and encourage
others to do the same. Then bring your friends, family, coworkers,
pets, mail carrier, hairstylist, lunch friends, or whomever you can to
Minnehaha Park on Sunday May 18, 2003. Your steps at the Walk will
make a difference!

I'll see you at the Walk!

Lorraine Teel
MAP executive director
