First thing: A big collective thank you (a handwritten thank you is on =
the way) to Paul Farmer and the other "Critical Perspectives on Health =
and Human Rights: HIV in Resource Poor Settings" panelists and =
co-sponsors cc'd on this email for helping to kick off a movement here =
at the U of MN medical school. Below is an email that describes some of =
our health and social justice activities in the works that all of you =
helped inspire and continue to support.

AMSA folks,

This email has a lot of info, so hold on tight. Check out the below =
email about a Global AIDS Action Quilt that Physicians for Human Rights =
is organizing around World AIDS Day and extending to Human Rights Day on =
December 10 (Yes, there is a Human Rights Day!). =20

We had suggested during our World AIDS Day(s) planning meetings ideas of =
creating a quilt-like space during our World AIDS Day(s) activities, so =
this will now give us a better organized way of making this happen. =
They will be able to supply us some materials and ideas. Plus, we will =
be able to send in our creation to be displayed nationally in DC in =
April! I'll contact PHR next week, so we can hopefully receive =
materials before the end of the month.

Also, at the Student Council meeting last week, student group funding =
decisions were made. Originally, the treasurer decided not to fund the =
No Free Lunch nor the Letters for Action, nor the Health Coalition for =
Nonviolence student groups saying that they the activities and mission =
of each group were very similar to the SPSR group. Also, they didn't =
know if some of the groups were merely one or two people asking for =
funding that will end up not actually having any activities, which =
happened some last year. When we submit applications for funding next =
year we will need to clarify the differences between each group's =
mission and activities a bit more. At the meeting, I clarified that the =
No Free Lunch/PharmFree group had actually met that day with over 12 =
folks attending and an abundance of activities in the works. After some =
discussion relating to the fact that if all groups were funded, the =
student council would be $3,000 in debt, I believe the council agreed to =
fund all groups, assuming some would actually not spend all their money =
allotted. So, I believe each of the groups that applied did receive =
funding, but I will double check on that next week.

I submitted an application to fund a new group called Medical Students =
For Global Health and Human Rights (MSFGHHR). The treasurer thought =
that it overlapped a lot with the student org. Physicians for =
International Awareness (headed by Stanley Iyudurai (sp?) and Margaret =
Njonjo), so they combined the two groups. I spoke with Margaret, who =
wasn't too thrilled at the unsolicited merger, and said that it made =
sense in some ways. I also spoke with the 4th year CC Rep, Steph =
Walters, who is currently on a rotation at the local Center for Victims =
of Torture (CVT). She said that a few folks there have been wanting to =
contact students to start up a local Physicians for Human Rights student =
chapter. PHR is a remarkable organization that has been fighting to =
defend against human rights abuses around the world, particularly =
pertaining to immigrants and displaced populations. I took a Health and =
Human Rights class with the Western region director of PHR a few years =
ago and have been meaning to start up a PHR chapter here.

In short, I hope to transform the MSFGHHR into a local PHR student =
chapter, which will focus on human rights as it relates to global =
health. I will contact the folks at the CVT and PHR to formalize a =
connnection, hopefully in time for World AIDS Day and Human Rights Day =
in December. World AIDS Day and the AIDS Quilt organized by PHR should =
be a great way to kick off our local PHR chapter and continue our =
amazing, incredible rejuvenation of AMSA. Of course the PHR student =
chapter will overlap a lot (activities and people) with the Global =
Health and Human Rights focus area of our AMSA student chapter.=20

I think it would also be great to follow up World AIDS Day with =
activities (possibly a lunch lecture or journal club discussion) on =
Human Rights Day, since AIDS prevention and treatment are essentially =
human rights issues. I'll bring these issues up again at the World AIDS =
Day(s) meeting on Monday, November 11 during lunch.

Speaking of World AIDS Day(s), Lisa Blonigen is leading the charge for =
the Publicity committee. We had four folks attend, some possibly could =
not make it due to difficulty in finding the seemingly hidden room. We =
will fill everybody in at the next WADs meeting about the important =
things planned to publicize our World AIDS Day(s) activities, which we =
all will need to chip in on a little bit.

Finally, we will be having our next AMSA meeting to finalize our chapter =
positions, to finalize the nitty gritty on our World AIDS Day(s) =
activities and to start talking about our next semester activities and =
fundraising. Looking at the 1st and 2nd year schedules, it looks like =
the only decent time to hold the meeting is on Tuesday 11/26 at 12:30pm. =
1st years have class until noon. 2nd years have the monstrous =
Pathophys exam from 9am - 1pm (since most exams don't take up the full =
four hours, I thought 12:30 would be good, so 1st years don't have to =
wait too long and those who do use up al four hours can still attend the =
latter part of the meeting). We can discuss if this works for most =
people. As a heads up, we will likely have one meeting in December as =
there are only 3 weeks, one of which is filled with exams. So, the =
meeting will likely occur early during the second week. This will be an =
important meeting as we will be tentatively planning the rest of the =
year, which will include a vision for our lunch lectures, journal club =
discussions, health and social justice films, the national AMSA meeting, =
No Free Lunch/PharmFree activities, PHR activities, CAM activities and =
the all important fundraising issues.

Peace out.

Quy

Professionals

Hi Everyone!

An exciting endeavor by PHR is coming up-please read on!!!!!!!!!!

PHR is organizing an GLOBAL AIDS ACTION QUILT -a symbolic visual display =
of health professionals' call to action, which will be used at future =
press, medical, and AIDS conferences around the nation. Individual =
chapter panels will be shown locally beginning on World AIDS Day =
(December 1) continuing through Human Rights Day (December 10). The =
final product will be displayed nationally on Monday, April 7 during the =
DC Day of Advocacy and Education at a press conference with members of =
Congress and ambassadors of AIDS affected nations- YOU CAN PARTICIPATE =
right now! Here's the quick 10 step procedure on how to get involved

1.. Contact the Quilt Campaign Coordinator at [log in to unmask] =
with:=20
    a.. Your Name=20
    b.. School/Group=20
    c.. Mailing Address=20
    d.. Email=20
    e.. Phone=20
    f.. Graduation Year=20

  Physicians for Human Rights=20
  attn: AIDS Quilt Coordinator
  100 Boylston St. Suite 702
  Boston MA 02116
  - for quilt making materials and World AIDS Day postcards. This fee =
will also help cover costs of the press conference and advocacy day. =
Expect to receive your quilt materials within three weeks of when you =
send in your check. Multiple student groups on your campus may be =
interested in helping create the quilt panels (i.e. AMSA, PHR, SNMA, =
AMWA & the Quilting Club) - if this does occur, please seek to share the =
materials fee.

3.. Send an email to your group and your classmates=20

4.. Reserve a table for December 1st through December 10th (World AIDS =
Day through Human Rights Day) in a high traffic area to display the =
panels, collect signatures, distribute fact sheets and information.=20

5.. Prepare for the meeting by making photocopies of the quilt flyer

  6.. At the quilt meeting:=20
    a.. Give an overview of what's entailed:=20

  Advocacy Panel

1.. Decide who will create the Advocacy Panel using the stencil to =
create advocacy message.=20
  Awareness Raising Panel

1.. Identify someone who can sew the squares together on the =
Awareness panel - Choose a theme for the Awareness Panel (see page on =
Themes/Topics)=20
2.. Decide how many squares & which topics you want to have on the =
Awareness Panel.=20
  7.. Begin Quilt Publicity -=20

  8.. Organize your action table/panel display=20

    - Fact Sheets
    - How to Get Involved Sheets
    - Health Action AIDS flyers

  10.. Regroup - celebrate - continue on! After December 10th, hold a =
follow up meeting/get-together to thank volunteers for their time, to =
assess whether each person met their target goals for number of =
signatures, and decide whether or not the group wants to try and obtain =
more signatures in January.=20
When Do the Panels Have to Be Completed?
Ideally, you would like to have your awareness raising panel finished by =
the week of World AIDS Day (December 1) so you may display it. However, =
not everyone will be able to complete their awareness raising panels by =
this date, nor will they have collected their target number of =
signatures by the end of the tabling week.=20

Both your awareness raising panel and your advocacy panel should be =
finished by February 15th. If you are participating in the Spring Press =
Conference/Advocacy Day in Washington DC, you can bring your quilt panel =
with you to Washington DC. If you are not planning to attend, send the =
panel to:=20
