Yo AMSA party people,

Check out the new AIDS Awareness Stamps released by the USPS - perfect =
timing for the upcoming World AIDS Day(s). Proceeds from these stamps =
will go to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria . =
I'm thinking that we should make these available for sale during our =
World AIDS Day(s). =20

Also, check out the below article, HIV/AIDS Programs 'Drain' Funds From =
Programs Aimed at Preventing Malaria, Advocates Say -- a very pertinent =
example of international health advocates fighting over pieces of a =
small pie instead of fighting to make the pie bigger, an issue we =
brought up during the Paul Farmer panel and the journal club discussion =
with Moise Desvarieux.

See you at the Pharm meeting during lunch on Thursday and at the World =
AIDS Day publicity meeting during lunch on Friday.

Quy

The United Nations Postal Administration on Oct. 24 issued three =
commemorative stamps and three semi-postal souvenir sheets with the =
theme of "AIDS Awareness." The stamps each feature a picture of the =
United Nations building decorated with a red AIDS ribbon (Kronish, =
Associated Press, 11/4). The stamps include the phrase "UNAIDS =
Awareness" down the side and are available for use in the United States, =
Austria and Switzerland (UNPA Web site, 11/5). The semi-postal stamps, =
issued for the first time by UNPA, cost more than a regular stamp -- 43 =
cents for a 37-cent stamp in the United States -- and the funds raised =
from the extra cost will go to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, =

Goals set two years ago by African leaders to reduce the incidence =
of malaria have not been met, according to a report presented by U.N. =
Secretary-General Kofi Annan to the U.N. General Assembly yesterday, the =
Washington Times reports (Carter, Washington Times, 11/5). According to =
malaria activists, the resources of programs aimed at fighting malaria =
-- which is preventable and curable yet kills approximately 2.7 million =
people each year -- are being "drain[ed]" by efforts to fight HIV/AIDS =
in Africa. In addition, the countries that have "persisted" in fighting =
malaria and tuberculosis over the past few years have been "critici[zed] =
for ignoring the HIV/AIDS epidemic," the Financial Times=20
