Non AMSA folks, please skip to the end of the email for a tentative =
schedule for the World AIDS Days activities and Human Rights Day =
lecture, including a tentative and possibly inaccurate list of sponsors.
Potential sponsors who have not yet replied, please let us know if you =
are able to sponsor WAD so that we can include your name and website in =
all advertisements, announcements and offer the opportunity to ask a =
"sponsor" question of the speakers. =20
All med and non-med students and faculty are welcome to attend the =
meeting as we will be discussing how to utilize volunteers from other =
schools as well. Thanks!
Hello all weary AMSA folks,
I know we are all in the throes of finals this week and next, but here's =
an announcement about the final World AIDS Day meeting / next AMSA =
meeting, which will be held together next Tuesday, November 26, at =
around 12:30pm, hopefully on 6th floor Mayo. We'll let you know the =
room soon. I say around 12:30pm because 2nd years have an exam from 9am =
- 1pm. Normally, exams don't take up the whole time, but this is an =
extremely long exam, so some of us may not make it until 1pm, but =
hopefully many of us will be done by 12:30. =20
Items to discuss:
1) Finalize all WAD logistics, volunteers (AMSA, SPH and Pharmacy) =
sponsors, money, AIDS organizations, activities, etc.,... as WAD is =
happening on the first days after Thanksgiving break. At the end of the =
email is a tentative schedule for WADs that I think we agreed upon at =
the last meeting.
We should also talk about when or if we want to show "And the Band =
Played On" (we hear it is 3 1/2 hours) or another AIDS related movie on =
Monday afternoon. 2nd years have the afternoon off and 1st years have =
histo lab from 1:25 - 3:20. Since 2nd years don't have class, perhaps =
we can ask the AIDS organizations to stay until 2pm or so and show the =
movie at around 2pm to allow more interaction time and a break and 1st =
years can come for the last part of it? Showing a movie in the 2nd year =
classroom is really quite easy and I would be willing to pop in the =
tape.
2) Two more lunch lectures the following week (Monday and Tuesday 12/9 =
and 10), one given by the Access to Essential Meds (full name TBD) group =
and hopefully one given by physicians from the Centers for Victims of =
Torture for Human Rights Day on 12/10. This last lecture will be =
co-sponsored by the soon to be created local Physicians for Human Rights =
student chapter, which will take the place of the Global Health and =
Human Rights focus area of AMSA.
3) Announce the new AMSA 1st year Co-chairs!
4) Select/elect the AMSA 2nd year Co-chairs? We never officially =
selected or elected 2nd year Co-chairs, so we can either talk about or =
just do it at the meeting
5) Give update regarding student council funding of AMSA and partner =
groups
6) Give updates from No Free Lunch/PharmFree (lots of stuff in the =
pipeline), PHR, Letters of Action and anyone else I am forgetting now.
7) Take a few moments to call or write in to George W. before he =
travels to Africa to encourage support for the Presidential AIDS =
Initiative as part of a national call-in day on 11/26.
November 26 National Call-In Day and DC Demonstration to support the=20
Presidential AIDS Initiative. In January 2003, President Bush will be=20
touring Africa. We are asking him to bring something meaningful on this=20
trip: real support for people living with AIDS. The PAI has three=20
essential components:=20
Ensuring access to affordable medication;=20
Ensuring prevention services and support for affected communities;=20
and=20
Ensuring adequate financial resources=20
For more information on the activities for November 26 and the=20
Presidential AIDS Initiative, go to http://www.healthgap.org/WAD.html
8) Brainstorm and plan activities for the rest of the year.
9) Anything else anybody wants to add.
10) Pictures of my new 7 lbs. 11 oz. niece born last night at 7:40pm by =
C-section at Abbott-Northwestern.
Peace out and get some sleep!
