FUTURE DIRECTIONS IN BIOLOGY STUDIES
Indiana University, July 26-30, 2006
We invite you to join us for the 2006 Future Directions in Biology
Studies (F-DIBS) graduate training workshop, July 26-30 at Indiana
University in Bloomington.
F-DIBS is a four-day intensive training workshop for graduate
students, advanced undergraduates, post-docs, and young faculty
interested in the history, philosophy, and social studies of biology.
Senior faculty are also invited to come.
The workshop will focus on the problems and prospects of
cross-disciplinary collaboration. Eleven scholars of distinction will
be addressing the following questions in their plenary talks: What is
the future of biology studies? What are the benefits and challenges
of interdisciplinary collaboration? Other faculty attendees will also
participate in hands-on roundtable discussions addressing training
issues, such as how to write a paper for submission to a journal,
strategies for navigating the job market, and how to obtain funding
for research in biology studies. Small group break-out sessions will
provide students the opportunity to discuss focused research topics
and case studies from multi-disciplinary perspectives. Each evening,
"Happy Office Hours" will provide younger scholars the opportunity to
meet each other and more senior scholars in area pubs and coffee
shops.

* James Griesemer (Philosophy & STS; UC Davis)
* Elisabeth Lloyd (Philosophy & Biology; Indiana)
* Mike Lynch (STS; Cornell)
* Staffan Mueller-Wille (History; Exeter)
* Erika Milam (History; Wisconsin)
* Roberta Millstein (Philosophy; Cal State East Bay)
* Alfred Tauber (Medicine & Philosophy; Boston University)
Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis (deadline for
applications is June 1). There is no registration fee. Housing in
student dorms is available at a reduced rate on a first-come,
first-served basis. To register or to indicate your desire for
