QUERY -- HISTORY OF THE MEPHISTOS CONFERENCE

The University of Notre Dame will host the 19th annual Mephistos
Graduate Student Conference for history, philosophy, and sociology of
science, technology, and medicine -- March 30 through April 1, 2001. A
call for papers and other conference details will be posted shortly.
Travel grants may be available.

Meanwhile, the Mephistos 2001 committee requests information concerning
the conference's history. We have received conflicting information and
wish to find out where this conference came from before finalizing our
vision for where it should head in the future. Please email to
[log in to unmask] if you can answer any of the following
questions or if you know someone who might have an answer:

1) When and where was the first Mephistos conference? Who started it,
and why?
2) Which schools hosted the conference prior to 1994? Please forward the
email addresses of each year's conference committee chair if possible.
3) What was the character of the conference in any given year: number of
presenters and attenders? geographical representation? disciplinary
representation?
4) If you have attended in the past, what suggestions do you have for
making the 2001 conference a success?

I thank you for your assistance in our efforts to restore Mephistos to a
successful conference of national, even international, scope.
