Director
Center for 21st Century Studies

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee invites applications and
nominations for the position of Director (Academic Program Director) of
the Center for 21st Century Studies, effective July 1, 2001. Founded in
1968, the Center is a postdoctoral research institute that fosters
crossdisciplinary research in the humanities. It is internationally
recognized for ground-breaking work over the past three decades in such
fields as film studies, mass culture, performance studies, aging,
technology, and everyday life. The Center has broadened the traditional
definition of the humanities by encouraging dialogues between the
humanities and the arts, the social sciences, and the natural sciences.
Fellows from different departments and disciplines are in residence at
the Center along with scholars from other countries. The Center
organizes study groups, informal colloquia, public lectures, and
conferences. Its book series, Theories of Contemporary Culture, is
published by Indiana University Press.

The Director holds a 50% administrative appointment and a faculty
appointment as a tenured professor in an academic department. The
Director has the opportunity to teach in the interdisciplinary Modern
Studies Doctoral Program and to participate in the Masters in Liberal
Studies Program. Applicants should have interdisciplinary research
interests, scholarly distinction commensurate with a senior
professorship, and a record of intellectual leadership and program
development. Administrative experience a strong plus. Salary is
competitive.

Candidates should submit a letter of application, a current vita, and
the names (with phone numbers and email addresses) of 3-5 references.
Additional materials may be requested at a later date. Applications
must be postmarked by March 10, 2001.
