1. Duke's 8th Annual Conference in Philosophy & Biology and the
Annual Consortium for the History and Philosophy of Biology will
occur May 22nd - 24th, 2009 at Duke University, Durham, NC. The
topic of this year's conference is "Form, Function and Homology":
homology and function in systematic taxonomy in evolution and
development. Register for free by May 15, 2009.

2. A prestigious History of Genetics Day will take place on Wednesday
9th September 2009 at the John Innes Centre (JIC) in Norwich, UK,
commemorating JIC's 100 year history and the legacy of William
Bateson. This will be the opening event of the 'John Innes Centenary
Symposium - Genetics 100 Years On' which runs from 9th to the 11th
September 2009. Register online.

3. Call for application for Alghero Summer School 2009, "The Social
Self," 20-27 September. The aim of the summer school is to provide a
limited number of qualified students with the opportunity to attend
short-courses of six hours (two hours each day), as well as main
lectures of two hours (one hour talk, one hour discussion), focused
on the analysis of the social roots of the Self. Application
deadline: June 30, 2009.

4. At the Swiss National Science Foundation sponsored professorship
of Marianne Sommer a doctoral and a postdoctoral position (100%) are
available, beginning February 1, 2010. The professorship is located
at the Department of History of the University of Zurich,
Switzerland. The positions are granted for the duration of four
years. The positions are part of the project "History Within: The
Phylogenetic Memory of Bones, Organisms, and Molecules" that engages
the cultural history of the historical life sciences. Deadline for
application: July 1, 2009.

5. Cincinnati Darwiniana is in full swing at the University of
Cincinnati. Sponsored by the Department of Philosophy and the Charles
Phelps Taft Research Center and organized by Bob Richardson and Rob
Skipper, Cincinnati Darwiniana is a speaker series linked to a
graduate seminar in the philosophy of biology. Seminar topics include
chance variation in Darwin, random drift and chance in evolution,
genetics and reduction, molecular evolution, and evo-devo. Podcasts
of the talks are available.

6. The University of Alberta announces a two-year postdoctoral fellowship
in science and technology studies at the University of Alberta,
funded by the SSHRC Cluster Grant, "Situating Science.". Start of
position: 1 August 2009. Application deadline: 29 May 2009.
