--------Message 1 of 2: KLI Fellowships - Correction---------

KLI Scholarships Available

The Konrad Lorenz Institute for Evolution and Cognition Research
(KLI) in Altenberg/Vienna (Austria) invites applications to two of
its scholarship programs: the KLI Postdoctoral Grant program and the
KLI Visiting Scholarship program.

The KLI is a private, non.profit institution which primarily supports
theoretical research in evolutionary developmental biology as well as
in evolutionary cognitive science. The KLI also runs a small animal
facility for selected empirical projects in evolution and cognition
research.

Candidates for Postdoctoral Grants must have received their Ph.D. or
equivalent within the previous five years; substantial publications
are required at the time of application. Postdoctoral grants run for
one year, extendable for a second year pending review. Postdoctoral
Grants are to be used for subsistence, travel, and other costs
related to conducting research at the KLI.

Candidates for Visiting Scholarships should have advanced degrees in
one or more disciplines relevant to their research and show evidence
of substantial scholarly accomplishment and/or professional
experience in the areas they propose to work in. They may apply for
visits whose duration ranges from one week to several months, and
which are renewable at the discretion of the KLI Board of Directors.
Visiting Scholarships cover travel and nearby accommodation provided
by the Institute.

Both Postdoctoral and Visiting Scholars are expected to work at the
Institute, which is located in the Lorenz mansion outside of Vienna,
and to actively participate in the seminars, round table discussions,
workshops, and other activities organized by the Institute.

The next application deadline for both categories is December 15,
2001. At this time, the KLI will favor applications of an
interdisciplinary nature related to theoretical evolutionary and
developmental biology.

Interested scholars from all nationalities are invited to send short
descriptions of their intended research along with their curriculum
vitae (in English) to the Scientific Manager of the KLI: Prof. Dr.
Werner Callebaut, Konrad Lorenz Institute for Evolution and Cognition
Research, Adolf-Lorenz-Gasse 2, A-3422 Altenberg, Austria; fax +43
2242 32 390 4; e-mail <[log in to unmask]> by December 15,
2001. They may then be asked to submit a formal application and a
more detailed project description. All formal project proposals will
be externally reviewed. Fellowship recipients will be announced in
March 2002.

Call for Papers

The New England Institute for Cognitive Science and Evolutionary
Psychology (NEI) invites papers for an historic international
conference on "Unconscious Cognition and Evolution".

The notion of unconscious mental events has been discussed and
debated for at least the past two hundred years, with no resolution.
The conference will explore the many contentious issues and problems
surrounding the concept of unconscious mental processes from a
variety of disciplinary perspectives and methodologies, including but
not confined to the biology of self-deception, language processes,
unconscious social cognition, the philosophical status of the
unconscious, the role of affect, and neuroscientific findings.
Conference papers will be published in the journal Theoria et
Historia Scientiarum.

The conference is to be held August 23-24, 2002, at the University of
New England, Portland, Maine. Papers should explore some aspect of
unconscious cognition and its evolutionary bases or directly related
processes.

Proposals should be received no later than March 1st 2002.

Send detailed proposals along with a brief bio to either Dr. David L.
Smith, or Dr. Robert E. Haskell, NEI, University of New England, 11
Hills Beach Road, Biddeford, Maine 04005, USA.
