Subject: Postdoctoral Research Fellowships -- version en ingles (fwd)

please distrubute to possible candidates

Instituto de Investigaciones Filosoficas,
Universidad Nacional Autinoma de Mexico

Postdoctoral Research Fellowships 1998-9

For the third year running the Instituto de Investigaciones Filosoficas
seeks to make two appointments at the level of postdoctoral research fellow
in philosophy. An appointment at the postdoctoral level is normally for
one year with a possible six month extension. It is expected that the
positions be filled from September 1998, though the starting date is
negotiable.

Successful applicants will need to have their PhDs by the commencement
date. They do not, however, need to know Spanish, though must be willing to
learn it. Throughout the period of the fellowship they will be expected to
carry out their proposed research, publish some of its results, supervise
the work of some of our students and teach a course. They will also be
expected to be available for individual discussions and participate in the
academic activities of the Instituto.

At the current exchange rate, appointees will receive around US$1000 per
month which is enough to live on in Mexico City.

Intending applicants must send an up-to-date curriculum vitae, a sample of
their work and a research project by the closing date. They should also
ensure that two academic references arrive by the closing date. These can
be posted, e-mailed or faxed to the Academic Secretary, Maite Ezcurdia
(e-mail: [log in to unmask]). The Instituto's details are:

(i) address in full for correspondence (home and office telephone numbers,
fax numbers and e-mail address);
(ii) nationality and date of birth;
(iii) academic history;
(iii) areas of competence and areas of specialisation;
(iv) publications (if any);
(v) teaching experience; and
(vi) the names and addresses of the two academic referees

Research Project
It should include a statement of general research interests, an outline of
the proposed research and expected publications, and the probable date on
which appointment, if offered, could be taken up.

Any further information may be obtained from the Academic Secretary, Maite
Ezcurdia (e-mail: [log in to unmask]).

Closing date: 31st of March, 1998.

Subject: ANNOUNCE: Recent Science website

The Center for History of Recent Science, George Washington University,
announces its website.

The site's URL is:
http://www.gwu.edu/~recsci

Features of the site include:

* Information about the Center, including how to apply for postdoctoral
fellowships.

* Current research projects of Center staff.

* Search capability--search all of the pages of the RecSci website,
including calendar pages, for items, people, and events related to your
area of interest

* Add-an-event form -- It is now easy to add events to the RecSci calendar:
just use the online form. The calendar also has many new events listed, and
is growing rapidly.

* Messageboard -- Post messages related to the field: job notices,
rideshares and roomshares for meetings, news of the field, queries to
colleagues.

* List of links -- Professional societies, archives, and other scholarly
resources on the web

* Crickboard -- an electronic corkboard with pictures of the Center staff
tacked up to it, with links to our home pages

* Around GW -- People and courses at George Washington University relevant
to the history of recent science

We hope this site will prove to be a useful contribution to the history of
science community and of interest to anyone interested in recent science.

HISTORY, PHILOSOPHY, AND SOCIAL STUDIES OF BIOLOGY

             Mols Laboratory, Femmoller (Jutland), Denmark
                               July 30 - August 5, 1998

The theme of the Third South Scandinavian Summer School in Science
Studies is the history, philosophy, and social studies of biology.
The particular topics to be treated this year are best explained with
reference to the following faculty:

- Claus Emmeche, Associate Professor in Natural Philosophy and
Science Studies, Copenhagen University. He has published, among other
things, _The Garden in the Machine: The Emerging Science of
Artificial Life_ (Princeton, 1994)

- Hans-Jorg Rheinberger, director of the Max-Planck-Institut fur
Wissenschaftsgeschichte, Berlin. His latest book is _Toward a History
of Epistemic Things: Synthesizing Proteins in the Test Tube_
(Stanford, 1997).

- Judy Johns Schloegel, Postdoctoral Fellow, Max-Planck-Institut fur
Wissenschaftsgeschichte, Berlin. She is writing about protozoology in
the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and a book, _Intimate
Biology_, on protozoan genetics in the United States.

- Vissiliki B. Smocovitis, Associate Professor in History of Science,
University of Florida. She has published, among other things,
_Unifying Biology: The Evolutionary Synthesis and Evolutionary
Biology_ (Princeton, 1996).

- Marcel Weber, Assistant at Center for Philosophy and Ethics of
Science, University of Hanover. He is the author of several articles
on the philosophy of biology and of the forthcoming book, _Die
Architectur der Synthese, Entstehung und Philosophie der modernen
Evolutionstheorie_ (Berlin, 1998).

- Thomas Soderqvist, Research Council Professor in Science Studies,
Roskilde University. He has written, among other things, _The
Ecologists_ (Stockholm, 1986) and his biography of the immunologist
and Nobel Prize winner Niels K. Jerne, _Hvilken kamp for at
undslippe_ (Copenhagen 1998), is published in May.

The program consists of lectures, tutorials, and group discussions.
PhD students are encouraged to prepare short presentation of their
dissertation projects in plenary sessions.

The Mols Laboratory is beautifully situated in a hilly area called
"The Mols Mountains" in eastern Jutland, Denmark. There are ample
opportunities for swimming in Kattegat and for walks in the
surrounding forests and heaths.

The maximum number of participants is 20. About half of the
participants will be Danish. Non-Danish participants can apply for a
stipend that covers all costs, including food and lodging, plus a
1000 DKK (approx. 150 USD) stipend for travel.

Applications, including a one page curriculum vitae and a 300 word
letter containing information about the applicant's ongoing PhD
research project, should be sent to "Summer School on Mols",
Department of Philosophy and Science Studies, Roskilde University,
P.O. Box 260, Roskilde, Denmark, or by e-mail to: [log in to unmask],
before May 1, 1998

Selected participants will be notified in early May.
