1. Bioethics and the New Embryology: Springboards
for Debate, has just been published. Written by
Scott Gilbert, Anna Tyler, and Emily Zackin, this
book discusses stem cell research, when human
life begins, cloning, sex selection, assisted
reproduction, normalcy, genetic engineering,
genetic determinism, and animal care.

2. Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press has
published a new book edited by Jan Witkowski. The
Inside Story: DNA to RNA to Protein is a
collection of history articles which first
appeared in the Elsevier journal Trends in
Biochemical Sciences. Authors include scientists
who carried out the research (for example Jean
Brachet, Marshall NIrenberg and Ed Southern) and
historians of science (Including Richard Burian,
Larry Holmes, Bob Olby and Hans-Jorg
Rheinberger).

3. Call for papers: The International Society for
the History of Philosophy of Science (HOPOS) will
hold its sixth international congress in Paris,
France, in cooperation with the Société de
Philosophie des Sciences (SPS). Dates: June
14-18, 2006 Location: École normale supérieure,
Paris. Proposals may be submitted in English or
French and must reach the Program Committee by
December 15, 2005 at the latest.

4. Charles H. Smith reports that he has just
finished making operational a new website
entitled "Some Biogeographers, Evolutionists and
Ecologists:
Chrono-Biographical Sketches" which provides
about 250 profiles of leading naturalists of the
past.

5. Call for posters/workshop suggestions: First
Symposium on Philosophy, History, and Methodology
of E.R.R.O.R. (Experimental Reasoning,
Reliability, Objectivity & Rationality:
Induction, Statistics, & Modeling), to be held at
Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia June 2-5,
2006. The Program Committee will begin reviewing
submissions: November 30, 2005; final date to
receive submissions: January 6, 2006.

6. Unruly Complexity: Ecology, Interpretation,
Engagement, by Peter J. Taylor, has now appeared
from the University of Chicago Press. It
addresses the the unruliness of complexity
through case studies that move from theoretical
ecology and socio-environmental studies to
history and sociology of science to environmental
education.

7. The University of Oklahoma invites nominations
and applications for a faculty position at the
rank of assistant professor (tenure-track) in the
Department of the History of Science. Starting
date is August 16, 2006. They seek candidates
whose scholarship addresses the modern history of
science, technology or medicine outside North
America, with a preference for applicants with
teaching and research expertise that includes the
eighteenth and/or nineteenth centuries. Review of
applications will begin October 15, 2005 with
preliminary interviews at the History of Science
Society meeting in Minneapolis.
