This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, June 10,
2010 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

This week the pleasant weather has left us, at least for the last two
days, and the forecast isn't much better for the next few days. Gardens
and grass are growing fast and the landscape is blindingly green. In the
far northwest, so far we have been lucky not to have received the brunt
of the latest storm system, and we hope that will continue. For wild
flower enthusiasts, now is the time to look for the state flower which
should be blossoming now.

In Lake of the Woods County, Katie Haws found nesting PIPING PLOVERS on
Pine/Curry Island in Lake of the Woods on June 1. Also present were one
DUNLIN, 2 RUDDY TURNSTONES, a WESTERN SANDPIPER, and some SEMIPALMATED
SANDPIPERS.

Ron Erpelding and Herb Dingmann, while in Clearwater County, saw UPLAND
SANDPIPER, COMMON NIGHTHAWKS, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, BROWN THRASHER, and
WESTERN MEADOWLARK.

Pam Murphy, southwest of Thief River Falls in Pennington County, this
week reported two nesting pairs of EASTERN BLUEBIRDS at their home.

Cory Floden heard a NELSON'S SPARROW in Polk County in the low area east
of O'Leary park in East Grand Forks, Polk County on June 6. Other
species seen included BROWN THRASHER and BOBOLINK.

Nancy Jackson in Clay County at Felton Prairie on June 8 saw MARBLED
GODWIT, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, BOBOLINK, WESTERN MEADOWLARK, and ORCHARD
ORIOLE.

In Hubbard County on June 6, Nancy found BLACK TERN, GREAT CRESTED
FLYCATCHER, WESTERN KINGBIRD, MARSH WREN, and nesting VESPER SPARROW.

Ben Wieland reported that the RED CROSSBILLS reported earlier were still
present in the southwestern part of Cass County. Another reporter has
seen them as recently as June 7. To reach this location: turn S off Hwy
210 on CR 36, 1/2 mi W of the Crow Wing Co line; in 2 mi CR 36 curves W,
at this corner turn left, and go 1/4 mi to the open pine stand on the E
side of the road.Other species seen in Cass County this week included 4
BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE along CR 19, and a HARRIS'S SPARROW. The YELLOW
RAILS and NELSON'S SPARROWS are still vocal at Swamp Lake , 10 miles
north of Walker on MN 371.

Thanks to Ben Wieland, Cory Floden, Katie Haws, Nancy Jackson, Pam
Murphy, and Ron Erpelding for their reports.

Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than
Thursday each week, at [log in to unmask] OR call the Detroit Lakes
Chamber's toll free number: 1-800-542-3992. Detroit Lakes area birders
