This is the Duluth Birding Report for November 25th, 2014 sponsored by
the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

A GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW was found by Jeff Newman at his backyard
feeders at 44th Avenue East and Regent Street and the bird was still
being seen as recently as the 25th. It is being seen sporadically in his
yard and in the alley above his home, on both sides of 44th Avenue East.
It is often in the company of Dark-eyed Juncos. Birders are welcome to
look for the bird but Jeff asks observers to stand by the corner of his
front porch and not in his yard. Dudley Edmundson reported a RED-BELLIED
WOODPECKER nearby on the 15th, at 43rd Avenue East and Cooke Street.

One of the COMMON EIDERS in Duluth continues to be seen as recently as
the 25th, mainly between the Beacon Point condominiums near 23rd Avenue
East and Leif Erickson Park near 14th Avenue East. The Common Eider at
Silver Bay in Lake County was last seen on November 15th. Three
LONG-TAILED DUCKS were seen on the 20th at 23rd Avenue East. Several
gull species were seen on the 22nd at Canal Park in Duluth, including a
first cycle ICELAND GULL, five adult and three first cycle THAYER'S
GULLS, and a second cycle GLAUCOUS GULL.

Clinton Nienhaus and JG Bennett found 24 SPRUCE GROUSE on the 22nd at
four locations along Lake County Road 2 and MN Highway 1. Many were seen
along CR 2 between the Sand River and MN 1, and others were seen at mile
marker 316 on MN 1. Tod Eggenberger also saw a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER
and at least four dozen RED CROSSBILLS on the 23rd along the Spruce Road
east of MN 1 at the intersection of the Endless Waters Road.

Sue and Steve Van Kekerix saw a SNOWY OWL in Two Harbors on the 23rd
near the Super One store. An injured SNOWY OWL was also picked up by
Kurt Mead in Finland on the 20th.
