This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, November 2,
2-17 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

Winter appears to be here. The ground is white, at least in the grassy
areas, and we have experienced our first slippery roads of the season
today. Bird species being commonly reported include Lapland longspurs,
and dark-eyed juncos. A few reports of snow buntings have come in this
week. There appears to have been a large movement of rough-legged hawks
this week. The wind of the past week seems to have blown a few birds off
course this week also.

A BLUE GROSBEAK is visiting the feeder of Katie Haws near Hines,
Beltrami County, for the last few days. Also there, is a RED-BELLIED
WOODPECKER and a RUSTY BLACKBIRD.

From Lake Carlos SP in Douglas County, Ben Eckhoff reported that the
BALTIMORE ORIOLE reported last week was still at the visitor center on
October 30. Aaron Ludwig found two juvenile SURF SCOTERS on Lake Osakis
on November 2.

At Glendalough SP in Otter Tail County, Mark Otnes observed three
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS on October 28.

Marshall Howe in Hubbard County reported SWAMP SPARROW, and AMERICAN
TREE SPARROW on October 29, RED CROSSBILLS and BROWN CREEPER on October
31, and FOX SPARROW on November 1. About 150 SNOW BUNTINGS were seen in
Menahga on November 2.

In Clay and Norman Counties, Matt Mecklenburg saw fifty ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWKS on November 1.

Sandy Aubol in East Grand Forks, Polk County, reported SHARP-SHINNED
HAWK and NORTHERN SHRIKE on November 2. Other species in her yard
included a pair of NORTHERN CARDINALS, HARRIS'S SPARROWS, WHITE-THROATED
SPARROWS, FOX SPARROW, PINE SISKINS, and COMMON REDPOLLS.

Shelley Steva saw a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK in Red Lake County on October 27,
and today she observed two flocks of LAPLAND LONGSPURS.

In Pennington County, Allyson Engelstad saw a RUSTY BLACKBIRD this week
.

Becca Engdahl found a SURF SCOTER on Lake Irvine in Bemidji, Beltrami
County, on October 30.

Roseau County birds observed this week by Beth Siverhus in Warroad
included PINE GROSBEAKS, BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, COMMON REDPOLLS, HOARY
REDPOLL, PINE SISKINS, and SNOW BUNTINGS. A male NORTHERN CARDINAL is
visiting the feeder of Tim Bjerk along the Warroad River.

Gretchen Mehmel in Lake of the Woods County reported PINE GROSBEAKS at
Norris Camp on October 30. Other species seen in the county included
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, a NORTHERN GOSHAWK near Faunce, and RED CROSSBILLS.

Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than
Thursday each week, at [log in to unmask] OR call the Detroit Lakes
Chamber's toll free number: 1-800-542-3992. Detroit Lakes area birders
please call 847-9202. Please include the county where the sighting took
place. The next scheduled update of this report is Thursday, November 9,
