This is the Duluth Birding Report for March 10th, 2016 sponsored by the
Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

A TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was seen by Ian Soumis on the 5th and 6th near
the East Bay Suites in Grand Marais. As many as seven LONG-TAILED DUCKS
continue to be seen at Agate Bay in Two Harbors.

A flock of 25 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS was seen on the 5th along MN Highway 61
at the McQuade Road. Cindy Edwardson saw a flock of 300 BOHEMIAN
WAXWINGS on the 4th at East Arrowhead Road and Vermilion Road in the
Woodland neighborhood of Duluth. Kristin Grover saw a flock of 100 on
the 9th along the Fiskett Road in Rice Lake Township, and John
Richardson saw a flock of 20 on the 10th at Thompson Hill in west
Duluth.

John also saw two GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS on the 7th at the Park Point
Recreation Area and another GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL along with an
ICELAND GULL and a THAYER'S GULL at Interstate Island. He reported the
first NORTHERN PINTAIL of the season at Interstate Island on the 7th,
and Clinton Nienhaus saw two additional NORTHERN PINTAILS here on the
8th. John reported the first CANVASBACK of the season on the 8th on Park
Point at 26th Street.

Frank Nicoletti, Dave Carman and others saw a record early
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK on the 5th at the West Skyline Hawk Count along
Skyline Drive below Enger Tower. They also counted 193 BALD EAGLES, five
GOLDEN EAGLES, and they saw the brown-colored juvenile GYRFALCON that
has been in the Duluth-Superior Harbor this winter. Both GYRFALCONS
continue to be seen near the Peavey elevator at Connor's Point off US
Highway 53 and along Winter Street in Superior.

The first TURKEY VULTURE of the season was reported by Jason Mandich on
the 5th near Forbes north of the Sax-Zim Bog. Scott Jung and Stephen
Nelson reported the first NORTHERN HARRIER of the season on the 7th at
Sax-Zim. Several observers in and around Ely reported the first singing
NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS of the season on the 6th.

The next scheduled update of this report will be on Thursday, March
17th.
