This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, September
24, 2009 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce.
You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or
1-800-433-1888.

This has been a great week of summer, even though the calendar says it's
fall, but it sure hasn't made for very lively birding. We are starting
to see large numbers of NORTHERN FLICKERS and AMERICAN ROBINS moving
through the area. Waterfowl are gathering in large numbers on area
sloughs, lakes, and fields. One sad note was reported by Ted Dick from
Baudette area in Lake of the Woods County. On Monday night September 23,
there was fog in the area, and next day about 300 birds of 40 species
were picked up dead by the Loran tower. They included mostly warblers,
sparrows, vireos, and 110 Swainson's thrushes.

Most of the reports this week come from Otter Tail County. Alma
Ronningen reported EASTERN PHOEBE, and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK on
September 21, BELTED KINGFISHER and RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH on September
23. A few TRUMPETER SWANS were also seen. Brad and Dee Ehlers still had
a RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD in their yard on September 21. 47 SANDHILL
CRANES were seen on September 20 near Vining. On September 22, the
Ehlers reported many CANADA GEESE in the area and a large flock of
AMERICAN ROBINS moving through Perham. On September 23 they saw NORTHERN
FLICKER, juvenile YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS, and many RING-BILLED GULLS
in Fergus Falls.

Sandy Aubol in East Grand Forks , Polk County observed a WHITE-THROATED
SPARROW in her yard on September 21.

Here in Pennington County, we have been noticing large numbers of
NORTHERN FLICKERS in the area.

At Agassiz NWR in Marshall County, the waterfowl are gathering, and last
weekend there were large flocks of both ducks and CANADA GEESE at the
refuge.

Thanks to Alma Ronningen, Brad and Dee Ehlers, Ted Dick, and Sandy Aubol
for their reports. Remember that this report is only as good as you make
it. Please continue to send in your reports.

Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than
Thursday each week, at [log in to unmask] OR call the Detroit Lakes
Chamber's toll free number: 1-800-542-3992. Detroit Lakes area birders

place. The next scheduled update of this report is Thursday, October 1,
2009.
