This is the Duluth Birding Report for January 20th, 2010 sponsored by
the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

A BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was found by Karl Bardon on the 16th on Lake
Superior along Scenic Highway 61 at the Lakewood Road. Karl also
relocated the SLATY-BACKED GULL on the 16th on the Minnesota side of the
Superior Entry and at the Superior landfill. THAYER’S GULLS, ICELAND
GULLS, GLAUCOUS GULLS, and GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS continue to be
reported from Canal Park in Duluth as recently as the 16th.

A GYRFALCON was seen by Deb and Steve Falkowski on the 17th near the
town of Virginia on the open mine dump hills south of town, in a
roadless area on the east side of Manganika Lake. Deb also reports that
many BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS are still being seen in town. Scott Loss and
others saw BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in Hibbing on the 14th near East 25th
Street and 10th Avenue East.

Observers continue to report GREAT GRAY OWLS and NORTHERN HAWK OWLS from
the Sax-Zim Bog, as recently as the 16th. BOREAL CHICKADEES are being
seen at the Admiral Road (CR 788) feeders 3.7 miles north of the Sax
Road (CR 28) and the Arkola Road (CR 52) feeders. BLACK-BACKED
WOODPECKERS have been seen near the Admiral Road feeders and along the
McDavitt Road (CR 233), 2.6 miles north of the Sax Road.
