This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, March 10,
2011 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

After a brief relapse, it seems that spring is teasing us again. We in
the northwest are welcoming the up and down temperatures as this will
help melt the snow slowly instead of all at once. It may reduce the
flood potential a bit. HORNED LARKS are coming through just now, and
some of the locals can be seen - the single birds that fly up from the
road shoulder.

Brad and Dee Ehlers reported about 20 COMMON REDPOLLS at the feeder in
Fergus Falls, and also a BALD EAGLE at a nest near Dalton at the freeway
rest area.

Mel and Elaine Bennefeld saw a male NORTHERN HARRIER on the north edge
of Buffalo River SP in Clay County, and a BALD EAGLE over Meadows Golf
Course in Moorhead on March 6.

From Polk County there are several reports of BALD EAGLES this week.
Sandy Aubol also observed a GOLDEN EAGLE about 1.75 miles east of the
intersection of CR 19 and CR 20 east of East Grand Forks. Bruce Flaig
continues to see a NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL in southern Polk County. About
100 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen by Sandy Aubol in East Grand Forks on
March 8. Leon Thoreson near Climax reported that they are feeding about
3 BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES, 7 HORNED LARKS, 2 LAPLAND LONGSPURS,160 SNOW
BUNTINGS, one COMMON REDPOLL, and 25 AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES. Ron Erpelding
and Herb Dingmann found a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER in Erskine, and 14 WILD
TURKEYS on the railroad tracks at milepost 54 between Erskine and Mentor
along CR 45.

Ron Erpelding and Herb Dingmann saw a GREAT HORNED OWL in Red Lake
County on March 8.

Linda Johnson reported a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH in Thief River Falls,
Pennington County, on March 6.

In Kittson County, Ron Erpelding and Herb Dingmann saw two SNOWY OWLS
west and north of Lancaster on March 7; other species seen in the county
included a GREAT HORNED OWL and 2 HOARY REDPOLLS.

Roseau County sightings included a NORTHERN GOSHAWK a half miles east of
MN 310 along 370th St. Other species seen included 2 NORTHERN HAWK OWLS,
GRAY JAYS, PINE GROSBEAKS, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, and a HOARY REDPOLL
on the east side of MN 89 3.5 miles north of Marshall County.

Carol Birkeland observed RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, GRAY JAYS, PINE
GROSBEAKS, and COMMON REDPOLLS on Silver Creek east of Baudette in Lake
of the Woods County. Gretchen Mehmel at Norris Camp reported a similar
mix of species at the feeders, also including PINE SISKINS on March 9.
She also reported a possible PEREGRINE FALCON fly over.

Thanks to Brad and Dee Ehlers, Bruce Flaig, Carol Birkeland, Gretchen
Mehmel, Leon Thoreson, Linda Johnson, Mel and Elaine Bennefels, Ron
Erpelding, Herb Dingmann, Ron Fischer, and Sandy Aubol for their
reports.
