This is the Duluth Birding Report for October 18th, 2012 sponsored by
the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Two GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE and three WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were
found by Shawn Conrad on the 17th at the Grand Marais harbor. He also
saw 20 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS at the Shoreline Inn. Three BLACK SCOTERS were
seen on the 14th at Agate Bay in Two Harbors. Frank Berdan saw two
LONG-TAILED DUCKS on the 16th just west of the McQuade Road, east of
Duluth.

Cindy and Chris Edwardson had a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER in their yard on
the 10th near Woodland Avenue and East Arrowhead Road in Duluth. They
also report that one is being seen on Boulder Dam Road near Island Lake.
Elizabeth Copper saw one in her yard in Melrude on the 14th.

In impressive total of 4,050 PINE SISKINS was counted at Hawk Ridge on
the 14th, the third highest count for the state. The first BOHEMIAN
WAXWINGS of the season flew past Hawk Ridge on the 14th and NORTHERN
SHRIKES and SNOW BUNTINGS also arrived in the area during the past week.
RED CROSSBILLS and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS have been seen almost daily
at Hawk Ridge during the past week.
