This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, May 13,
2010 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

This has been a dreary week in the northwest, rain most days, dark
clouds, and cool temperatures. One has to feel sorry for those early
returning migrants. Everything is vibrant green around here, and leaves
are appearing on the trees. A few warm days, and all will be completely
leafed out, making birding a real challenge. Two species have made
nearly everyone's report this week - ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK and
BALTIMORE ORIOLE. The grosbeak seems to have made it at least to
Pennington County, while the oriole was reported in Polk County this
week.

Connie Cox reported a ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK in Clearwater County near
Itasca SP on May 9.

Gregg Knutsen and Gary Tischer reported from Agassiz NWR in Marshall
County this week. Birds seen there this week included the first families
of goslings, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER on May 10, and WHITE-CROWNED
SPARROW at the headquarters feeders all week. On May 13, Gregg Knutsen
saw 4 WESTERN GREBES on Headquarters Pool, an AMERICAN BLACK DUCK on
Parker Pool, a PEREGRINE FALCON at Tamarack Pool, and 4 immature BALD
EAGLES on the mudflats at Agassiz Pool which is in drawdown. So far
there are no shorebirds on the mudflats, but we are hoping for some
soon.

Pam Murphy in Pennington County reported nesting SHARP-TAILED GROUSE,
AMERICAN BITTERN, nesting MOURNING DOVES, and RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD
on May 9.

Bruce Flaig in southern Polk County observed BALTIMORE ORIOLE on May 10.
Sandy Aubol saw ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK in East Grand Forks that day.

Mel and Elaine Bennefeld in Clay County on May 10 found HOUSE WREN,
HERMIT THRUSH, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, HARRIS'S
SPARROW, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK at the
Ponderosa Golf Club. Mark Otnes saw a COMMON RAVEN on May 9 near the
entrance to Buffalo River State Park.

In Becker County, Dave and Betty Hochhalter saw RUBY-THROATED
HUMMINGBIRD on May 10, and BALTIMORE ORIOLE on May 11 at their home in
Detroit Lakes.

Otter Tail County sightings by Dan and Sandy Thimgan on May 9 included a
CATTLE EGRET at Grotto Lake in Fergus Falls. Other species seen in the
county that day were PEREGRINE FALCON, NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW,
HOUSE WREN, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, and BREWER'S BLACKBIRD. On May 10
they saw WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, and on May 11, EASTERN TOWHEE, and
HARRIS'S SPARROW. On the 12th, a ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK showed up. Alma
Ronningen in Dent, reported BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER on May 8, BALTIMORE
ORIOLE on May 9, YELLOW WARBLER on May 12, and RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD
and CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER on May 13.

Thanks to Alma Ronningen, Bruce Flaig, Connie Cox, Dan and Sandy
Thimgan, Dave and Betty Hochhalter, Gary Tischer, Gregg Knutsen, Mark
Otnes, Mel and Elaine Bennefeld, Pam Murphy, and Sandy Aubol for their
reports.
