This is the Duluth Birding Report for January 14th, 2010 sponsored by
the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

At least four GREAT GRAY OWLS were seen on the 13th in the Sax-Zim Bog.
Sparky Stensaas and others saw one along CR 7, 1.4 miles north of CR
133, two were along the McDavitt Road (CR 233), 3.8 miles north of the
Sax Road (CR 28), and one was seen about 0.25 mile north of the end of
the Little Whiteface Road, which is 0.4 mile north of CR 133 and CR 47.
Kim Eckert and others saw an AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER on the 8th
along the McDavitt Road, 2.6 miles north of the Sax Road. A NORTHERN
HAWK OWL has been seen by several observers along the McDavitt Road, 1-3
miles north of the Sax Road.

Kim's group saw two SPRUCE GROUSE on the 9th in Lake County along MN
Highway 1 about 0.2 mile south of the Spruce Road, and a NORTHERN HAWK
OWL 0.5 mile south of the Spruce Road. Cheryl Beyer saw a GREAT GRAY OWL
on the 10th along MN Highway 1 at the Kawishiwi River. The VARIED THRUSH
in Ely along Main Street at Pillow Rock was still present on the 9th.
Bill Tefft has been seeing WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS on a regular basis in
Ely along Pattison Street around 5th Avenue.

Dave Johnson found a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE in downtown Duluth on the 10th
in front of the courthouse at 1st Street and 5th Ave West. A NORTHERN
SAW-WHET OWL was seen on the 7th in Duluth two doors west of Chester
Bowl on Skyline Parkway. Michael Furtman saw a NORTHERN FLICKER on the
10th off Snively Road in the Woodland neighborhood of Duluth. THAYER’S
GULLS, ICELAND GULLS, GLAUCOUS GULLS, and GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS
continue to be reported from Canal Park as recently as the 13th.

Shawn Conrad found a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER in Grand Rapids on the 12th
at the DNR headquarters. Deb Falkowski saw a flock of about 300 BOHEMIAN
WAXWINGS on the 12th at the Mesabi Community College campus in Virginia.
Warren Nelson had a flock of 200 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on the 12th in his
yard in Aitkin. A VARIED THRUSH is being seen daily in Aitkin County,
and birders interested in seeing the bird should contact the landowner,
