This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, February 8,
2018 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

The cold weather has dampened the enthusiasm of birds and birders alike,
and it shows no sign of improving in the next few days. Feeders have
been busy with the usual winter residents.

Last week , Carol Birkeland reported a PILEATED WOODPECKER and GRAY JAY
at her feeders in the Baudette area of Lake of the Woods County.

Beth Siverhus in Warroad, Roseau County observed PINE GROSBEAKS on the
crabapple trees, and reported a male NORTHERN CARDINAL at a home in
Warroad.

I saw several flocks of SNOW BUNTINGS in Pennington County on February
7, one near Thief River Falls, and some along MN 1 .

Two SNOWY OWLS were reported in Red Lake County this week. Paula Cater
also reported a WESTERN MEADOWLARK that is overwintering at her place
near Plummer.

A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW is visiting Sandy Aubol's feeder in East Grand
Forks, Polk County, from time to time this winter.

In Fergus Falls, Otter Tail County, Jason Swelstad observed a HOODED
MERGANSER on February 7. Wayne Perala also reported a SHORT-EARED OWL,
GREAT HORNED OWL and SNOWY OWL in Otter Tail County that day. He also
saw a NORTHERN SHRIKE, twelve GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS, and many COMMON
REDPOLLS.

In Grant County, Wayne saw a SHORT-EARED OWL , a GREAT HORNED OWL, many
COMMON REDPOLLS, and several RING-NECKED PHEASANTS on February 7.

Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than
Thursday each week, at [log in to unmask] OR call the Detroit Lakes
Chamber's toll free number: 1-800-542-3992. Detroit Lakes area birders
please call 847-9202. Please include the county where the sighting took
place. The next scheduled update of this report is Thursday, February
15, 2018.
