This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, October 29,
2015 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

The leaves are gone in northwest Minnesota now, and snow has made a
short-lived appearance, and promise of more to come. Feeder species
variety has greatly diminished, and many of the birds reported below
have undoubtedly now departed with the weather of the last couple of
days. Owls are now the birds to be looking for and are starting to
appear. Please do not disturb them in the rush to get photos, as they
may be really needing to hunt for food.

A SNOWY OWL was spotted by Emily Hutchins in Polk County about three
miles east of Crookston along US2 on October 23. On the 25th, Leon
Thoreson saw one four miles east of Climax on CR 41. Both observers
mentioned that the owl was pure white, and somewhat smaller than
expected, leading one to think that maybe this is the same owl, as the
last location is almost directly south of the first sighting. Emily
Hutchins saw a GOLDEN EAGLE near the intersection of US 2 and MN 32 on
October 23, and she also reported two NORTHERN SHRIKES in Polk County
this week. Leon Thoreson reported 20 PINE SISKINS, a FOX SPARROW, two
HARRIS'S SPARROWS, one WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, and fifteen DARK-EYED
JUNCOS at his feeders this week. Twenty AMERICAN CROWS were seen feeding
on a carcass.

In Hubbard County, Jim Brown saw an OSPREY flying over Mantra Lake on
October 23. Marshall Howe reported a PINE SISKIN at Lake Alice bog, a
BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER at Itasca State Park, six FOX SPARROWS, and an
AMERICAN TREE SPARROW in Hubbard County on October 23. On October 27 100
RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were seen at Park Rapids.

Charlene Nelson in Grant County reported 500 FRANKLIN'S GULLS feeding in
the fields near Elbow Lake on October 23.

Thanks to Charlene Nelson, Emily Hutchins, and Leon Thoreson for their
reports.

Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than
Thursday each week, at [log in to unmask] OR call the Detroit Lakes
Chamber's toll free number: 1-800-542-3992. Detroit Lakes area birders
please call 847-9202. Please include the county where the sighting took
place. The next scheduled update of this report is Thursday, November 5,
2015.
